Benefits of Sports Massage

Massage may:

  1. Aid circulation and lymphatic flow;
  2. Improve performance and temperament;
  3. Improve suppleness and range of movement;
  4. Reduce adverse effects of over-training;
  5. Sedate or stimulate nerve endings;
  6. Speed the removal of toxins;
  7. Relieve muscle soreness;
  8. Benefit the rehabilitation of the injured athlete;
  9. Prevent or relieve adhesions and scar tissue;
  10. Aid mental preparation for sporting participation;
  11. Extend an athlete's overall sporting career;
  12. Prevent injury*.

*A continuous build-up of tension in the muscles may lead to stresses on joints, ligaments, tendons as well as in the muscles themselves. These muscle imbalances may take a few months to become apparent, by which time they have caused more serious injury. Prompt attention to those "minor" muscle injuries not only enhances performance but may prevent future problems. Muscle tightening is transmitted from one muscle group to another, resulting in extra stress being placed on the tendons. Muscles may also over-enlarge with tension.
