Benefits of Equine Sports Massage

Massage may:

  1. Improve performance and temperament;
  2. Improve suppleness and range of movement;
  3. Reduce adverse effects of over-training;
  4. Aid recovery after competition;
  5. Speed the removal of toxins;
  6. Relieve muscle soreness;
  7. Benefit the rehabilitation of the seriously injured horse;
  8. Prevent or relieve adhesions;
  9. Prevent injury*.

* Small muscle injuries may take a few months to become apparent, by which time they have caused more serious injury. Prompt attention to those "minor" muscle injuries not only enhances a horse's performance but may prevent future problems. Muscle tightening is transmitted from one muscle group to another so, for example, shoulder tension may be transmitted to the muscles of the forearm, resulting in extra stress being placed on the tendons. Muscles may also over-enlarge with tension.

Signs of Relaxation!

When may Sports Massage Therapy be Used?

Pre-competition - to warm up muscles and other soft tissues.

Post competition - to relieve muscle pain and stiffness.

Schooling difficulties, for example:

  • lack of balance;
  • stiffness on one rein;
  • unable to maintain outline and engage hindquarters;
  • reluctance to jump.

If the horse exhibits cold backed symptoms.

Rehabilitation following injury.

General well-being, relaxation and to aid temperament.

Sports massage therapy is never used as a replacement for veterinary attention.
